The munthā's house — The sixth bhāva — Ari

Ari is the bhāva of what must be contended with: adversaries and rivals, obstacles, debts, disputes, service rendered under another's direction, and daily toil. Its structure is deliberately double. As a dusthāna it is one of the difficult houses; as an upachaya it is a house that improves with effort and age; as a triṣaḍāya its lord is counted among the tainted. The texts resolve the tension practically — the sixth describes friction, and friction can be mastered.
What the friction becomes is read from the sixth lord's state, the occupants of the bhāva, and the aspects upon it; the computed chart beside this passage carries those facts. Tradition adds a characteristic note: strong malefics here are said to subdue opposition rather than suffer it, while an afflicted sixth lord scattering into key houses spreads the contention. The chart decides between them.
